Chapter 21

While the excitement grew over Bevin’s success, I slipped off to my room to let him have his moment. I sat at my desk making a calendar of the homework I needed to finish in the next few days. Just as I pulled out my history assignment to make an outline for a paper that was due in three weeks, someone knocked at my door.

I swiveled in my seat and sniffed the air. “What’s up, Bev?”

He slowly opened the door. “Why did you leave? Are you okay?”

He glowed and it made me happy. I gave him another hug and he felt different. Gods, this is so weird! I backed up and sat on my bed, pulling him with me. “I’m great, I just wanted you to have your time. Did I hear Aunt Allison come over?”

“Yeah. She gave me a checkup.”

“How did that go?”

“Good. I’m all male. She’s running some tests. She pulled some labs for you as well in case you needed to run any tests, but she thinks everything is good. She said she wants to talk to you about what supplements I still need.”

I quirked my mouth to the side and rubbed my eyes. “We may need to bring in an expert. I know Dad has someone on payroll. This goes beyond what I know…”

He leaned in, wrapping his arm around me. “I get it. I’m just reeling right now. This spring break has gone way different than expected.”

“I’m just so happy for you. I don’t know how we’re going to tell the school…or rather you, or if you should. You’re going to have to pretend to be your old self. You’re excited about finally being you, but you can’t show them who you are—not without medical records.”

He stared at me. “I hadn’t thought about that. This just got more complicated…but I can continue doing what I have been doing.”

I laughed, giddy with excitement for him.

He squeezed my hand. “I think it’ll be okay. I change in the men’s locker room, but in the bathroom. I’ll continue to do that. No one should be the wiser.”

I leaned over and kissed his cheek.

He started to vibrate. “I’m so freaking excited. It’s done. I can be me. I’m no longer icky.”

A laugh erupted out of me. “I love how happy this makes you. When are you going to tell the others?”

“I don’t know. Maybe we can have the girls over on Sunday, before school. I’ll probably tell José tonight or tomorrow, whenever we talk next.”

I looked up at him sharply. “You two are talking regularly again?”

Bevin blushed. “Yeah. I couldn’t stay mad at him long. You know how I’ve always felt about him. I mean, at least since high school when I was promoted from annoying kid to friend…maybe even best friend. He also wasn’t wrong about Phillip…neither were you. I finally broke down and told him that we should only be friends last night. I realized that even without you and Piper there fighting, there really wasn’t any romance between us—at least not on my end.
